Balyasny Asset Management has poached a top volatility trader from Goldman Sachs as demand for equity derivatives pros heats up.
Travis Potter, a managing director in equity derivatives at Goldman, is joining Balyasny as a portfolio manager, sources familiar with the matter said.
Spokesmen for Balyasny and Goldman declined to comment.
Balyasny, the $9 billion fund run by Dmitry Balyasny, has been on a hiring spree the past year, hiring 40 new money managers and nearly 100 analysts in 2020, according to a January report from Bloomberg.
Equity volatility traders have been in high demand across Wall Street after a year flush with market shocks that pushed derivatives trading to its highest levels in a decade — producing monster trading revenues for banks in the process.
Another trader on the Goldman derivatives desk, Shawn Tuteja, also recently left for the buy-side, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The departures come on the back of Goldman adding Mitchell Story, a top volatility trader from Bank of America, to its derivatives desk.
Bank of America this week also lost David Kim, the head of equity client solutions and its most senior equity derivatives trader, to the buy side. He's headed to Citadel, according to efinancialcareers.
